Douglas J. Roger, MD is the Medical Director of Joint Replacement at the Institute of Clinical Orthopedics and Neurosciences at Desert Regional Medical Center and has been with ICON since its inception. Dr. Roger has more than 20 years of experience as a board certified orthopedic surgeon and has performed several thousand total hip and total knee joint replacements, among other procedures such as complex revision surgery, partial joint resurfacing and hip and knee arthroscopy.
Dr. Roger specializes in minimally invasive total joint replacement. He developed the Direct Superior Approach for total hip replacement – a minimally-invasive procedure that spares the iliotibial band (IT band) and involves less muscle and tendon damage, less pain, a lower dislocation rate and a faster recovery. Dr. Roger has trained surgeons from around the nation in this technique. Dr. Roger also is trained in the use of the MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System for greater accuracy in implant alignment for total hip arthroplasty and partial knee resurfacing.
A native of Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Roger earned his Medical Degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He served his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.
Dr. Roger is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). He also is a Qualified Medical Examiner for the California Industrial Medical Council. Dr. Roger is well published in his specialty, having authored dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals and his research has been presented at numerous educational conferences around the world.
